PROJECTS

The Junior League of Texarkana is committed to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our community projects are offered annually and support local children.

Open Hearts Food Pantry

In partnership with Harvest Regional Food Bank

We assist children facing food insecurity.

Upon learning that secondary students do not benefit from weekend food assistance programs such as those offered to elementary children, our new member class of 2017 – 2018 set out to find a solution. Open Hearts Food Pantry was adopted as a project in 2018 to meet the needs of middle schoolers facing food insecurity. Through this project, we provide funding and volunteer hours in support of Harvest Regional Food Bank’s weekend food assistance program.

Packs for a Purpose

We provide care packs for children in foster and kinship care.

When children must leave their homes through the Division of Children and Family Services (AR) or Child Protective Services (TX), they often have only a trash bag in which to gather their belongings. We adopted Packs for a Purpose in 2018 to meet the needs of these children. Our packs contain living essentials, school supplies, and comfort items which assist in maintaining the dignity of children.

Shoes for the Soul & Clothes for a Cause

With support from local school districts

We provide shoes and clothing to children in need.

Shoes for the Soul was adopted as a project in 2005. It has since expanded to include Clothes for a Cause. With support from local schools, we identify children in need of shoes and clothing and spend a morning shopping together.

Teacher Take Wing

With support from local school districts

We support classroom teachers.

Since the 1990s, we have awarded grants to area teachers for innovative, classroom projects through Teacher Take Wing. With support from local schools, our League distributes grant applications to teachers at the beginning of each school year. Applications are reviewed, scored, and ranked anonymously by the Teacher Take Wing Committee, and grants are awarded in the fall.
