The proceeds of these fundraisers support our annual community projects:

HOLIDAY FROM THE HEART – We owe a big thank you to Wal-Mart, which matches League funding for this project. Each December, over 60 students from area schools who might not otherwise receive Christmas gifts are given $125 each and enjoy a morning of shopping with a JL Volunteer. Many children purchase gifts for their family as well as themselves. In addition to the gifts, each child receives a picture with Santa and a food basket to take home to their family.

 – Give a child a pair of shoes and give them dignity. In an ongoing partnership with Payless Shoe Source and a new partnership with Target, the League works with all local school districts to select children to shop at Payless for new shoes and at Target for a new outfit with the help of a Junior League volunteer. The JLT provides over 900 pairs of shoes to over 500 children each year and we are excited to be providing new clothes this year as well.

ONCE UPON A PROM - New and gently used prom dress donations are accepted to provide deserving area teenagers witha beautiful dress for Prom at no cost to the students.  Fund are also available to provide shoe, hair and makup vouchers.  When enough funds are avaioable, we have also purchased a dress or rented a tuxedo when needed.

– R-E-A-D! In an effort to encourage school-aged children to develop a greater interest in reading, the JLT partners with area school districts to help promote literacy. The day begins with a “Spring into Reading” pep rally that includes cheerleaders, drill team, and motivational speeches from coaches and athletes who talk about the importance of reading and reveal their favorite books. The children return to their classrooms where JLT volunteers, high school students and employees from Capital One, our Spring into Reading community partner, read to them. They all receive backpacks with 3 new books, a snack and information on the public library.

TEACHER TAKE WING –This project provides grants to area teachers for innovative in-class projects that might not otherwise be funded. Applications are accepted, reviewed, scored and ranked by a League committee, and the grants are awarded to the highest scores. No proposed project can seek more than $500 in funds. The JLT funded $11,608.08 in grants this past year.

STARLAB – This portable planetarium holds a fascination for all students who get to experience it.  Crawl inside to see planets, constellations and phases of the moon!  Learning materials are provided and it’s available year round.  There is no fee, simply call the League office to reserve.
