Mistletoe Fair

Mistletoe Fair is the kickoff to the holiday shopping season in Texarkana. The 33st annual three-day shopping extravaganza, to be held November 15-18, 2018, will offer specialty merchants from across the United States. More than 8,000 shoppers are expected to visit Mistletoe Fair this year for exciting unique gift buying opportunities.

The proceeds of these fundraiser supports our annual community projects:

OPEN HEARTS FOOD PANTRY - Recognizing that middle school children do not benefit from the government-sponsored backpack feeding program offered to deserving elementary school students, JLT partners with Harvest Texarkana to provide a similar program for middle school students in our community.  It only costs $125.00 to feed one child for the entire year and 60 students will benefit from this program.

PACKS FOR A PURPOSE - In partnership with CASA, JLT provides backpacks to displaced children who are in need of help from the Court Appointed Special Advocates.  If a child must leave their home, they often only have a trash bag in which to gather their belongings.  The backpacks provided by JLT contain comfort items and assist in maintaining a child's dignity.

SHOES FOR THE SOUL/CLOTHES FOR A CAUSE – Give a child a pair of shoes and give them dignity.  The League works with all local school districts to select children to shop at Target for new shoes and clothing with the help of a Junior League volunteer. The JLT provides hundreds of pairs of shoes and clothing items to over 500 children each year.

– R-E-A-D! In an effort to encourage school-aged children to develop a greater interest in reading, JLT partners with area school districts to help promote literacy. The day includes a Spring into Reading pep rally involving cheerleaders, drill team, and motivational speeches from coaches and athletes who talk about the importance of reading. The children return to their classrooms where JLT volunteers and high school students read to them. They all receive backpacks with 3 new books, a snack and information on the public library.

TEACHER TAKE WING –This project provides grants to area teachers for innovative in-class projects that might not otherwise be funded. Applications are accepted, reviewed, scored and ranked anonymously by a League committee, and the grants are awarded to the highest scores. No proposed project can seek more than $500 in funds.
