Addressing our focus area of Childhood Literacy, Spring into Reading normally begins with a pep rally at a selected school that includes performances by cheerleaders and band members. Coaches, athletes, school staff and JLT volunteers give motivational speeches emphasizing the importance of reading. The children return to their classrooms where JLT volunteers and high school students read books to the young students. The children receive a new backpack containing brand new books, a healthy snack and information about our local public library.
Because the pep rally and in-class reading portion of this event would not comply with social distancing restrictions currently in place, the dedicated volunteers on the Spring into Reading committee have developed a virtual version of the event. The committee and other JLT volunteers will create a video of themselves reading a book which can be shared with both the in-class and at-home students. The committee would also like to provide books, but they need your support to accomplish this.
